Material Internet Field Kit: Warsaw

The Material Internet Field Kit: Warsaw is an attempt at engaging with the Internet and its infrastructures beyond the ever-present myth of immateriality that metaphors such as the Cloud continually reinforce in public discourse. The zine presents a counter-mythology: Based on a two-week residency in Warsaw and the North of Poland, it tells poetic stories, narrates encounters, and plays with graphical and linguistic speculations about an Internet cult(ure) that is not just floating up in the air, but rather rooted firmly in the ground, society, environment.

The counter-mythology revolves around Poland's most central digital infrastructures, its data centers and cable lines, its antennas and landing stations, and weaves their appearances and physical manifestations together with the people who work there, the nonhumans who live around, within, among, and inside them, and the cultural imaginations, metaphors, and narratives that arise around them.

This project was kindly commission by the → Biennale Warszawa. The zine was accompagnied by a public lecture entitled Islands in the Cloud: An Incomplete Guide To the Physical Internet in Poland at the 2022 Biennale Warszawa.
